The Five Mountains Festival (FLG) has once again made history in cultural resilience this year in 2026. For 25 consecutive years, this art event initiated by the Five Mountains Community (KLG) has been successfully organized without relying on corporate sponsors or government funding, making it a unique cultural phenomenon in Indonesia.
The XXV celebration, which took place in Warangan Hamlet, Magelang, on July 10-12, 2026, stands as a silent witness to the consistency of the villagers in preserving tradition. The Head of KLG, Sujono, emphasized that the key to the festival's sustainability lies in the spirit of mutual cooperation (gotong royong), sincerity, and brotherhood among residents, which have been deeply ingrained since the community was pioneered by cultural figure Sutanto Mendut back in 1997.
Uniquely, the festival involves the complete participation of the villagers. Long before the event begins, residents work shoulder-to-shoulder to build stages from natural materials and prepare homestays for hundreds of artists coming from various regions. This year, as many as 1,274 artists from 85 art groups enlivened the event through a variety of performances, ranging from traditional dance to cross-disciplinary collaborations.
Carrying the theme "Makin Goblok Bareng" (Getting Foolish Together) coined by Sutanto Mendut, this year's festival invites the public to return to humility amidst the onslaught of information in the digital era. The theme serves as a reflective invitation for the public to keep opening up to learning together, discarding ego, and building a more humane civilization through an honest process.
More than just an entertainment stage, the Five Mountains Festival has transformed into a space of dialectic for the people living on the slopes of Merapi, Merbabu, Andong, Sumbing, and Menoreh. In its silver anniversary, FLG remains a symbol of rural strength in nurturing culture as a noble heritage that continues to live, evolve, and remain relevant amidst the rapid currents of changing times.
