The global eco-friendly vehicle market is now not only crowded by battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The Japanese automotive giant, Toyota, continues to mature its Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (FCEV) technology through its flagship model, the Toyota Mirai, a premium hydrogen-powered sedan offering net-zero emissions.

First introduced in 2014, the Toyota Mirai has now entered its second generation with the TNGA-L platform in a rear-wheel drive (RWD) configuration. Unlike conventional BEVs that require charging from electric stations, the Mirai generates its own electricity through a chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen inside the fuel cell system, with water vapor as the only pure byproduct.

The car's powertrain is equipped with an electric motor capable of delivering up to 182 PS of power and a maximum torque of 300 Nm. With energy supplied from efficient hydrogen tanks, this luxury sedan can travel up to 650 kilometers on a single full fill-up, equivalent to the long-distance performance of conventional fuel-powered cars.

In addition to its long driving range, the main advantage of this FCEV is the very short time it takes to refill the hydrogen tank, which is only about 3 to 5 minutes. In terms of safety and comfort, Toyota has embedded the latest Toyota Safety Sense technology as well as a premium minimalist cabin design to ensure optimal driving comfort.

Globally, the Toyota Mirai is priced between 50,000 and 67,000 USD. However, Toyota Indonesia has not yet released the official price or domestic launch schedule for this unit. This is due to a number of crucial challenges, ranging from the limitation of hydrogen refueling stations (SPBH), supporting regulations, to the calculation of a competitive selling price for the local market.
