The Indonesian government is currently taking strategic steps to transform the national palm oil industry by positioning cooperatives as key players. This policy is part of President Prabowo Subianto's vision to strengthen the role of the people's economy in strategic commodity sectors long dominated by large corporations.
The government's directives are not limited to plantation cultivation. Cooperatives are actively encouraged to expand into downstream business sectors, including Crude Palm Oil (CPO) processing. Through this vertical integration, cooperatives are expected to independently produce cooking oil, which in turn can increase added value for farmers and maintain supply stability in the domestic market.
This step is believed to be an effort to create a more competitive and inclusive business climate. By involving cooperatives in the cooking oil production chain, the government hopes to reduce public reliance on major players while strengthening the bargaining power of cooperatives amid global commodity price fluctuations.
