The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has officially normalized access to the online forum platform Reddit. This step ends 11 years of digital isolation for Indonesian users, who can now access the site via standard web browsers without the need for a Virtual Private Network (VPN) or additional encryption.
The decision to lift the block was made after a series of strict compliance evaluations against Indonesian regulations. The Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Komdigi, Alexander Sabar, stated that the platform's management has agreed to content governance commitments in accordance with national laws, including the implementation of geoblocking features for the Indonesian region.
As part of the agreement, Reddit management has implemented a more aggressive content moderation system. The main focus is clearing the platform of prohibited materials such as pornographic content, gambling, and other illegal materials that were previously the primary reasons for the access block since 2015.
Although access has now been opened, the government still emphasizes the importance of legal operations. Komdigi requires Reddit to immediately register as a Private Scope Electronic System Provider (PSE). This step is an absolute prerequisite to ensure long-term compliance with the national digital jurisdiction.
The authorities also issued a stern warning that supervision will continue to be tightened. Komdigi stated that they would not hesitate to re-implement blocking measures if content violations that violate the norms and legal regulations applicable in Indonesia are found in the future.
