The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Banten Province continues to step up mitigation measures and preparedness following the escalation of Mount Anak Krakatau's (GAK) status to Level III or Alert. The local government issued a firm advisory urging the public not to panic, assuring that tourism activities along the coast from Anyer to Carita remain within safe parameters.
Head of Banten BPBD, Lutfi Mujahidin, emphasized that his agency is currently focusing not only on direct eruption monitoring, but also on formulating strategies to anticipate secondary impacts. The primary focus of these measures is measured and coordinated mitigation against potential tsunami threats.
"We have intensified mitigation efforts since the beginning of the year and reinforced them after GAK's status was raised to Alert. Inter-sectoral coordination continues to be maintained closely with PVMBG, BMKG, as well as TNI and Polri elements to ensure operational readiness for disaster response scenarios," said Lutfi in Serang, Monday (7/13/2026).
As an added form of protection for tourists and coastal communities, Banten BPBD has also provided rapid evacuation training to the Lifeguard Rescue Body (Balawista). This step is part of an educational effort so that all personnel stationed on the coastline possess the necessary skills to handle emergency situations.
Lutfi stressed that evacuation decision-making will always be based on accurate scientific data. The public is expected not to rush into evacuating unless there is a confirmed tsunami hazard indication from authorized agencies. Meanwhile, an observer from PVMBG, Anggi Nuryo Saputro, reminded the public not to compare GAK's current geological condition with past events, given the significant morphological changes the volcano has undergone.
