The Class IV Harbormaster and Port Authority Office (KSOP) of Bakauheni has officially issued an instruction restricting shipping areas around Mount Anak Krakatau (GAK). This policy follows the escalation of the volcano's activity status to Level III or Alert (Siaga), based on data from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).
The Head of Class IV KSOP Bakauheni, Suratno, emphasized that all ship captains are strictly prohibited from sailing within a minimum safe distance of 5 kilometers from the active crater of GAK. This preventive measure was taken to minimize risks to fishing boats, tourist boats, and commercial vessels operating in the waters around Sebesi and Sebuku islands from the potential ejection of volcanic materials and ashfall.
Despite the heightened status of the volcano, Suratno assured that the main crossing traffic on the Bakauheni-Merak route remains operating normally and is unaffected. He stated that the crossing route is still safe for ferry operations.
As part of ongoing mitigation efforts, port authorities will continue to monitor volcanic activity developments through intensive coordination with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) and PVMBG. All captains are urged to keep updated via official channels and immediately report to the Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) or the nearest harbormaster if they detect any signs of danger along their shipping routes.
