The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Center (TNBTS) has officially issued a policy to temporarily close the climbing route of Mount Semeru. Based on Announcement Letter Number PG.16/T.8/TU/HMS.01.08/B/07/2026, climbing access will be closed from August 7 to 18, 2026.
The Head of the TNBTS Center, Rudijanta Tjahjah Nugraha, emphasized that the closure of this route is a step of appreciation for the execution of Hari Raya Karo, which is celebrated by the Tenggerese community. The management ensured that this policy is not related to the volcanic activity of the mountain, which recently erupted.
Although climbing access is closed, tourists are still allowed to visit the recreation and camping areas around Ranu Regulo. The area will continue to operate normally for the public during the closure period of the climbing route.
On the other hand, the current condition of Mount Semeru is still at Level III (Alert). An officer at the Mount Semeru Observation Post, Liswanto, recorded an eruption with hot cloud avalanches traveling 4 kilometers on Thursday (2/7) evening. The public and climbers are urged to comply with the 5-kilometer exclusion zone from the crater to avoid potential hazards.
Hari Raya Karo itself is a sacred religious and cultural celebration for the Tenggerese community. This event, commemorated every Karo month in the Tengger Saka calendar, serves as a means for local residents to perform self-purification and reflect on human origins.
