The United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has officially recognized Toan Phat Irradiation Co., Ltd. as the first facility in Vietnam to operate dual technology for fresh fruit quarantine processing. This recognition allows the company to utilize X-ray irradiation technology alongside its existing Cobalt-60-based gamma irradiation technology.
The integration of X-ray technology represents a strategic breakthrough for Vietnam's horticultural industry. With more advanced processing capabilities, Toan Phat is projected to double its handling capacity. This serves as a crucial solution in overcoming logistical bottlenecks during peak harvest seasons, thereby significantly minimizing the risk of cargo backlog, escalating storage costs, and shipping schedule disruptions.
To secure APHIS approval, the company underwent a series of rigorous assessments, including equipment testing, operational procedures, radiation dose control, and product traceability systems. Vietnam's Plant Protection Department emphasized that the company must strictly comply with all plant quarantine protocols, packaging procedures, and data management in accordance with the operational standards agreed upon by both countries.
Vietnam's fruit and vegetable sector is currently recording impressive export growth, with the United States ranking as one of its primary destination markets. Data shows a 12.2% increase in export value to the US market in the first half of 2026. Supported by more efficient irradiation technology, the export flow of fruit commodities such as mangoes, dragon fruit, and pomelos to the United States is expected to continue rising while maintaining strict phytosanitary compliance.
