The military world is currently on the brink of a major transformation as a result of the massive penetration of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. No longer limited to digital spaces or creative industries, AI is now becoming the backbone of future defense system development. The strategic focus of developed countries has shifted from merely procuring physical fleets such as tanks or warships, towards mastering sensor technology, decision-making algorithms, and autonomous weapons systems, often known as Lethal Autonomous Weapons Systems (LAWS).

Data from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) notes a surge in global military spending reaching US$2.887 trillion in 2025. This eleven-year upward trend confirms that the defense sector has become a massive economic ecosystem. Currently, defense tech startups are starting to challenge the dominance of conventional defense equipment manufacturers by offering software integration solutions that are more agile, adaptive, and precise.

However, this rapid innovation brings complex moral and legal challenges. Unlike civilian technology applications, the use of AI in the military touches on crucial issues of human safety and accountability. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and various UN forums continue to urge strict regulation so that life-and-death decisions remain under human control. International humanitarian law principles, such as proportionality and precaution, must remain the primary guardrails in any development of combat technology.

For Indonesia, this phenomenon serves as momentum to strengthen the national defense industry's independence through DEFEND ID. The strategic step that can be taken is not to get trapped in an autonomous arms race that lacks a mature ethical foundation, but instead to focus on mastering supporting technologies. Developing national capabilities in cybersecurity, sensors, drones, and data processing is a more realistic step to build a competitive defense ecosystem.

Ultimately, the future of the modern defense business is measured not only by the sophistication of the machines, but also by the extent to which these technologies can be managed responsibly. Indonesia must position itself smartly: continuing to innovate in mastering defense technology without neglecting legal compliance and public trust. Technology integration in the future must ensure that the defense system remains a tool subject to common sense and human values.
