PT Indah Kiat Pulp & Paper Tbk (INKP) is currently in a crucial transformation phase aimed at ending its reliance on global pulp commodity price fluctuations. This strategic move focuses on strengthening its packaging business, which is projected to become the backbone of the company's future revenue.
At the center of this transformation lies the new production facility in Karawang. According to research by Mirae Asset Sekuritas Indonesia, the USD 3 billion project is viewed as a major catalyst that will reshape INKP's business profile. The company will no longer be known merely as a commodity-cycle-driven pulp producer, but will transition into a key player in the packaging industry with more stable profitability.
INKP's packaging production capacity is set to jump significantly due to the plant's operations, with total additional capacity reaching 3.9 million tons. In the initial phase, the plant is targeted to produce 2.4 million tons of packaging. This capacity boost is crucial to supporting the company's broader market expansion goals.
Operationally, the Karawang plant offers a competitive edge over its predecessor facility in Serang. With white packaging products comprising 77 percent of output—significantly higher than the Serang plant's approximately 30 percent—INKP is expected to achieve more competitive selling prices along with much healthier profit margins for the company's long-term business sustainability.
