Mount Semeru has once again shown a significant increase in volcanic activity on Friday (3/7/2026). Throughout the morning, the highest mountain on Java Island was recorded experiencing seven consecutive eruptions in just four hours.
According to data from the Mount Semeru Observation Post, the series of eruptions began at 06:06 WIB with an eruption column height reaching 700 meters. The intensity of the eruptions varied until reaching a peak height of 1,300 meters above the summit, recorded at 07:58 WIB and 09:48 WIB.
Liswanto, an observation officer at the site, stated that the resulting ash column was generally white to gray with a fairly thick intensity heading southeast and south. This phenomenon was clearly recorded by seismograph equipment with a maximum amplitude reaching 22 mm.
To date, Mount Semeru's volcanic activity status remains at Level III (Alert). Relevant authorities have issued a stern warning to residents and hikers not to conduct any activities within a five-kilometer radius of the main crater, given the dangerous threat of incandescent rock ejecta.
Furthermore, communities living along the slopes and users of river routes must increase vigilance. A special warning is issued for areas along Besuk Kobokan, Besuk Bang, Besuk Kembar, and Besuk Sat, which are potential pathways for pyroclastic flows and cold lava flows, especially within a radius of 13 to 17 kilometers from the eruption epicenter.
