Stock market performance during the first half of 2026 showed fairly strong dynamics, with the technology, energy, and industrial sectors leading gains amidst global economic uncertainty. Data shows that the Technology Select Sector SPDR Fund (XLK) successfully posted a significant year-to-date gain of 33%, despite experiencing a correction in June due to concerns over the sustainability of artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure spending and potential interest rate adjustments by the Federal Reserve.
The energy sector, represented by XLE, also made a positive contribution with a growth of 21%. This increase was driven by geopolitical tensions affecting global supplies and an oil price premium that spiked earlier in the year. Meanwhile, the industrial sector (XLI) recorded a 20% gain, propelled by high demand in the aerospace sector and massive construction of AI-technology-based data centers.
Behind the impressive sectoral performance, investors now face cautious market sentiment. Rising prices for AI infrastructure and the threat of inflation that could trigger restrictive monetary policies remain crucial focal points monitored by the market. This caution grew stronger following the release of the June employment report, which recorded only 57,000 new jobs—a figure well below analysts' expectations.
Although the unemployment rate dropped to 4.2%, a decline in labor force participation to 61.5% and steady wage growth at 3.5% indicate a slowdown in economic activity. This less expansive labor market condition is expected to be a decisive factor for future financial policies, forcing market participants to be more selective in positioning their investment portfolios for the remainder of 2026.
