The Probolinggo Regency Government, through the Agriculture Office (Diperta), is tightening animal health supervision in the poultry farming sector. This preventive measure is carried out through intensive pullorum testing on layer breeding business units across the local area.
The monitoring activity, involving a collaboration between the Probolinggo Regency Agriculture Office, the Malang Animal Health Laboratory UPT (Labkeswan), and the East Java Provincial Livestock Office, targeted at least 867 samples. This effort focuses on early detection of the Salmonella pullorum bacteria, which poses a serious threat to livestock productivity.
Head of the Probolinggo Regency Agriculture Office, Arif Kurniadi, emphasized that pullorum testing is a mandatory routine agenda for all breeding businesses. This is necessary because the infection risks causing high mortality rates in chickens, while also posing a zoonotic threat that can jeopardize public health as end consumers of livestock products.
On the same occasion, Head of the Animal Health and Veterinary Public Health Division, Drh. Nikolas Nuryulianto, stressed the importance of biosecurity discipline for farmers. He urged business operators in Wonomerto, Sumberasih, and Pakuniran Districts to maintain coop hygiene and sanitation standards to minimize transmission risks.
As a mitigation step, the office has prepared handling protocols if positive cases are found, ranging from appropriate antibiotic administration to improvements in livestock health management. These efforts are made to ensure that animal-origin food products circulating in the community continue to meet the ASUH standards (Safe, Healthy, Whole, and Halal).
