Changan Indonesia has officially introduced the advantages of Range Extended Electric Vehicle (REEV) technology as a more practical alternative to the Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) system. This technology is claimed to offer a driving experience closer to a battery electric vehicle (BEV) without range anxiety.
Dwi Setiyoko, After Sales Trainer at Changan Indonesia, explained that the key difference lies in the drivetrain mechanism. In a REEV system, the electric motor serves as the primary driver, while the gasoline engine functions solely as a generator to charge the battery. This differs from a PHEV system, where the gasoline engine can take over direct propulsion of the wheels under certain conditions.
Eliminating the mechanical link between the gasoline engine and the wheels makes the REEV construction simpler and more efficient. This technical efficiency not only reduces production costs but also leads to more optimal fuel consumption for domestic users, particularly given the developing state of electric charging infrastructure across various regions.
As a concrete step, Changan is introducing this technology through the Deepal S05 model. This vehicle is equipped with a 1,500 cc gasoline engine featuring energy recovery during deceleration. Setiawan Surya, CEO of Changan Indonesia, targets this model to become a sales backbone, backed by a commitment to protection in the form of a battery warranty of up to eight years or 240,000 kilometers.
