Volcanic activity at Mount Ile Lewotolok in Lembata Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, has increased significantly. A total of seven villages in East Ile Ape District were reported to be affected by sand rain due to eruptions that have continued over the past few days.
Acting Head of East Ile Ape District, Ignas Wutun, detailed the affected areas including the villages of Todanara, Jontona, Lamatokan, Bao Lalu Dulu, Lamaau, Aulesa, and Lamagute. Meanwhile, two other villages, namely Lamawolo and Waimatan, were reported to be free from exposure to the volcanic material.
Although sand rain hit the area, local authorities ensured that no residents have reported health complaints so far, such as acute respiratory infections (ARI) or skin irritation. The district government is currently maintaining intensive coordination with the local health center to conduct regular monitoring of residents' health as an anticipatory measure.
Data from the Mount Ile Lewotolok Volcano Observatory recorded 107 eruptions during the observation period on Sunday (5/7/2026). The eruption spewed an ash column 400 meters high, accompanied by glowing lava ejection extending up to 200 meters toward the southeast sector of the crater, accompanied by weak to moderate rumbling sounds.
In response to this situation, the local government has urged all residents living on the slopes of the mountain to remain calm yet increase vigilance. Residents are asked to consistently adhere to safety protocols and official directives from the government to minimize the risk of further volcanic activity impacts.
