Makassar State University (UNM) is currently pioneering the use of organic waste bioconversion technology using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, or maggots. Led by Prof. Dr. Adnan, M.S., this innovation aims to promote sustainable agriculture systems, strengthen national animal feed self-sufficiency, and tangibly implement circular economy principles.

The research, titled the development of BSF-based bioconversion, received funding support from the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Indonesia. The entire testing and cultivation process is centered at the Biology Experimental Garden Laboratory (LKPB), Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences (FMIPA) UNM.

In its implementation, the research team collects various organic wastes from restaurant leftovers, traditional markets, and culinary MSMEs around the campus area. The organic waste is then used as a growth medium for BSF larvae, which can quickly decompose the waste into high-protein biomass for fish and poultry feed, while the remaining residue (frass) is reprocessed into high-quality organic fertilizer.

The Head of the Research Team, Prof. Dr. Adnan, M.S., explained that this breakthrough plays a crucial role in addressing environmental problems while strengthening food security. According to him, multi-sector collaboration is highly needed so that the results of this research do not just stop in the laboratory, but can be widely implemented to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) agenda.

The project also integrates academic aspects by directly involving students from the Department of Biology, FMIPA UNM, in all stages of the research. By applying the pentahelix partnership concept—bringing together academia, government, business, community, and media—UNM aims for outputs in the form of alternative feed formulas, organic fertilizers, and circular business models applicable to the wider community.
