Mount Lawu, towering at 3,265 meters above sea level (masl), recently welcomed a remarkable young hiker, Anjani Rengganis. Despite being only seven years old, the young girl who will soon enter first grade successfully reached the summit via the Cemoro Sewu route early on Sunday morning (July 5, 2026).
Unlike adult hikers who chase scenic summit views, Anjani's motivation was remarkably simple and adorable. She was determined to climb the mountain because she wanted to meet a cat that was reportedly often seen roaming around Post 5 up to the summit area. This desire served as the fuel for her spirits when facing rocky terrain and extreme weather.
The journey, which began on Saturday morning (July 4, 2026), was marked by physical challenges. While navigating the path between Post 2 and Post 3, Anjani experienced severe fatigue due to cold temperatures dropping between 10 and 13 degrees Celsius. However, that fatigue vanished instantly whenever she remembered her promise to meet her favorite animal.
The hiking companion, Awan Setiawan, explained that mountain climbing was chosen as an educational school holiday alternative so that children wouldn't be glued to their gadgets. Although they successfully reached their destination, he emphasized the importance of thorough preparation for parents wishing to take children hiking, ranging from physical readiness and medical supplies to adequate warm clothing.
Even though upon arriving at the summit Anjani discovered the cat she was looking for had moved down to Post 5, the experience remained a precious memory for her. Other hikers and trail officers expressed their appreciation for Anjani's bravery in facing the challenging mountain terrain, which demands endurance and patience.
