The Bandung City Government is taking a progressive step in addressing waste issues by partnering with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN). Through this synergy, several sub-districts (kecamatan) and urban villages (kelurahan) in Bandung City received innovative waste processing equipment to strengthen independent waste management systems directly at the source.
The handover of this appropriate technology assistance took place at Sport Jabar Arcamanik, coinciding with the Jabar Berseka Alert Roll Call. Several areas receiving these organic waste processing facilities include the Cisaranten Endah, Cisaranten Bina Harapan, Sukamiskin, and Cisaranten Kulon urban villages. In addition to these villages, similar support was also distributed to sub-districts such as Arcamanik, Rancasari, Coblong, Bandung Wetan, Cicendo, and Buahbatu.
The Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, expressed his appreciation for the research support from BRIN and the West Java Provincial Government. He emphasized that the main challenge today is no longer creating new technology, but rather how to optimize the implementation of existing technology within the community to reduce dependence on landfills (TPA).
Farhan also stressed the importance of formulating evidence-based public policies. The presence of BRIN, collaboration with various universities, and synergy with the Citarum Harum Task Force are expected to yield sustainable waste management solutions and significantly improve sanitation governance at the local level.
Meanwhile, the Head of BRIN, Arif Satria, introduced 'Lahsamor', a practical household-scale organic waste processor. Operating the tool is quite simple: organic waste is placed in the container, rotated periodically, until the waste decomposes naturally with the help of active microorganisms.
Through the implementation of this household-to-industrial scale technology, West Java is expected to become a national pilot region in the transition of waste management towards a high-value circular economy concept.
