Historically, the Gunung Kawi pesarean (tomb complex) is the final resting place of Eyang Jugo and Eyang Sujo, two freedom fighters and Islamic scholars who were followers of Prince Diponegoro. In the past, pilgrims came purely to pay homage to their ancestors and seek spiritual blessings. However, over time, stories of past pilgrims' financial success were misinterpreted as the result of pesugihan practices, which were then amplified by the entertainment industry and popular culture that love to package the mystical side as a commodity.
Responding to digital flyers circulating that offer "pesugihan packages" promising mystical money, the management of Pesarean Gunung Kawi emphasized that this is a fraudulent practice carried out by irresponsible individuals. The management has established a transparent price list for traditional ceremony needs, such as tumpeng (rice cone offerings), offerings, and wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performances. All of these fees are intended solely for logistical accommodations and appreciating local artists, not for supernatural ritual transactions.
The viral nature of this issue is also inseparable from a sociological perspective. Amid economic pressure and public policies perceived as burdensome, modern society often uses mystical narratives as a form of escape or catharsis. Laughing at or making pesugihan content viral on social media can be viewed as a form of passive protest or satire against a difficult reality of life, where fantasies of "shortcuts" become a reflection of collective despair in facing contemporary economic challenges.
