The Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection (KemenPPPA) has urged the public to increase vigilance against the threat of Human Trafficking (TPPO). Currently, these crime syndicates are reportedly becoming more adept at utilizing digital technology developments to snare victims.
Deputy for Women's Rights Protection at KemenPPPA, Desy Andriani, revealed that technological transformation has changed the operational map of human trafficking. While recruitment was previously conducted face-to-face, perpetrators have now shifted to using social media, instant messaging applications, and online job vacancy platforms to be faster and harder to detect.
Desy explained that TPPO now comes under various guises that are very close to daily life. Some of these include sexual exploitation, labor recruitment with promises of high salaries, and fictitious internship programs under the guise of education.
Even more concerning, the perpetrators' use of technology is not limited to the initial approach stage. The entire chain of crime, from recruitment, control over victims, illegal financial transactions, to the exploitation process, can now be fully controlled online.
Given the thin line between cybercrime and its real-world impact, KemenPPPA urges the public not to be easily tempted by instant job offers. The public is expected to be more selective and verify the clarity of procedures and the legality of every offer received.
