The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has assured that the activity of Mount Tangkuban Parahu was unaffected by a magnitude 2.7 tectonic earthquake that struck the West Bandung Regency area on Thursday (7/9/2026). Based on in-depth evaluations, no indications of increased volcanic activity were found at the volcano.
The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded the earthquake's epicenter at coordinates 6.83 S and 107.65 E. Although tremors were felt by residents around the mountain area, instrumental monitoring by the Geological Agency showed stable conditions. Deformation data recordings, using both tiltmeter equipment and Electronic Distance Measurement (EDM), showed no anomalies in the volcano's structural changes.
Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, emphasized that to date, the status of Mount Tangkuban Parahu remains at Level I or Normal. Nevertheless, authorities continue to advise the public and tourists not to let their guard down. Visitors are urged not to descend to the bottom of the crater, especially in the Kawah Ratu and Kawah Upas areas, to avoid exposure to hazardous volcanic gases.
The public should understand that Mount Tangkuban Parahu is characterized by phreatic eruptions that can occur suddenly due to the geothermal system beneath the crater. Therefore, strict monitoring remains in place, and periodic evaluations will continue to be updated by the authorities. Residents are asked to remain calm and rely only on official information from relevant agencies to ensure mutual safety.
