The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has issued a strong warning to tourists not to approach the crater area of Mount Kelimutu in Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. This advisory remains in effect even though recent data shows a drop in water temperature at Crater II, also known as Tiwu Ko'ofai Nuwamuri.
According to a technical report released on Sunday, the Acting Head of the Geological Agency, Lana Saria, explained that the water temperature in Crater II dropped from 35 degrees Celsius to 33.2 degrees Celsius. The data was obtained by the field technical team after comparing measurements taken between June 30 and July 4, 2026.
Despite the decrease in water temperature, the Geological Agency noted that the visual condition of the lake water remains stable, maintaining a light green color since mid-June. Furthermore, no significant changes were detected in seismic activity or the height of the smoke column above the lake's surface. Currently, Mount Kelimutu's alert status remains at Level I (Normal).
The Geological Agency emphasized that prohibiting access to the crater rim is a preventive measure to minimize the risk of sudden phreatic eruptions. Tourists are urged to strictly adhere to the designated safe zone for mutual safety.
In addition to the warning for visitors, relevant authorities are also encouraging local governments and the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) to strengthen coordination with the Mount Kelimutu Volcano Observatory. This synergy is necessary to ensure volcanic activity monitoring remains optimal under the guidance of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG).
