The volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait has returned to the spotlight after experiencing a series of eruptions on Wednesday, July 8, 2026. This event occurred just hours after a magnitude 5.3 tectonic earthquake shook the Banten region and its surroundings at 02:44 WIB.

Speculation regarding a link between the seismic tremor and the increased volcanic activity immediately arose among the public. However, the Head of the Volcano Work Team of the Geological Agency, Heruningtyas Desi Purnamasari, firmly dismissed this assumption. She stated that to date, no evidence has been found of a direct cause-and-effect relationship between the megathrust earthquake and the eruption.

Heruningtyas explained that the increase in Anak Krakatau's activity had actually been detected long before the earthquake occurred. Since June 1, 2026, monitoring has shown sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions as well as consistent thermal anomalies. This trend was then followed by the appearance of a hotspot in the crater on June 10, as well as an increase in the intensity of shallow earthquakes, indicating the dynamics of magma movement beneath the surface.

As of Wednesday afternoon, several eruptions were recorded, spewing ash columns up to 250 meters above the peak. Based on data from the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources' Magma system, the eruptions were accompanied by seismic amplitudes varying between 24 and 50 millimeters. Currently, the volcano's status remains at Level III (Alert).

Regarding the earthquake felt by residents, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reported that the earthquake's epicenter was located at sea, approximately 62 kilometers southwest of Sumur, Banten, at a depth of 43 kilometers. The tremors reached a Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI) scale of IV, which was felt quite strongly by local residents, but BMKG assured that the earthquake did not trigger a tsunami threat.

In response to the active Alert status, authorities urge the public, tourists, and hikers to stay away from the crater area within a 3-kilometer radius. The Geological Agency continues to closely monitor the development of the situation to ensure the safety of residents around the coast of the Sunda Strait.
