The Temanggung Regency Government has taken a strategic step in education and sports by launching the Special Sports Class (KKO) program at SMP Negeri 2 Temanggung. This innovative program is designed so that young athletes no longer face the dilemma of choosing between pursuing sports achievements or receiving formal education.
Starting in the 2026 academic year, the first cohort of the KKO program accommodates 32 selected students in one learning group. In the initial phase, the training focus is directed at sports branches considered to have high potential for achievement in the Temanggung region, namely soccer and men's and women's volleyball.
The Regent of Temanggung, Agus Setyawan, explained that the establishment of the KKO is a concrete commitment of the regional government to align the school curriculum with the development of sports talent from an early age. He admitted that many potential young athletes fade away due to difficulties in dividing time between tight training schedules and the academic demands of general schools.
Through this program, the learning system will be adaptively adjusted so that students can still train intensively and participate in tournaments, such as the Soeratin Cup and Persitema Junior development, without falling behind in their studies. The Temanggung Regency Government is also committed to conducting periodic evaluations in the first year to assess the program's effectiveness before opening up opportunities to add new sports branches in the future.
The presence of this KKO was welcomed by parents who felt helped by a flexible yet targeted curriculum. In addition to honing physical and tactical skills, KKO students are equipped with strong character development, including discipline, sportsmanship, and teamwork for their future.
