The performance of the motor vehicle industry in Indonesia showed an encouraging growth trend during the first six months of 2026. The Association of Indonesia Automotive Industries (Gaikindo) noted that market enthusiasm has increased again, primarily triggered by the presence of various new models offering a combination of modern design, cutting-edge technology, and increasingly competitive prices.
Gaikindo's Chairman of Market Development, Jongkie Sugiarto, revealed that consumer enthusiasm remained stable thanks to manufacturers' efforts in launching products relevant to domestic market needs. This model refreshment strategy proved effective in maintaining consumer appeal amidst market dynamics.
Based on Gaikindo's statistical data, wholesales figures (factory-to-dealer distribution) from January to June 2026 were recorded at 436,564 units. This figure reflects a 15.9% increase compared to the same period in the previous year, which reached 376,707 units. Meanwhile, retail sales reached 433,848 units, growing by 10.5% year-on-year.
A positive trend was also observed in monthly performance in June 2026, where wholesales surged by 32.9% year-on-year to 77,550 units. Market dominance was still held by Toyota, recording sales of 22,809 units, followed by Daihatsu and Suzuki, which posted 14,125 units and 6,057 units, respectively.
Despite being optimistic about sustained growth in the second semester, Gaikindo remains cautious of several macroeconomic challenges. External factors such as high interest rates, fluctuations in the rupiah exchange rate, and public purchasing power conditions are considered crucial variables that could affect the acceleration of the automotive industry until the end of 2026.
