Mount Semeru has once again shown a significant increase in volcanic activity. Based on the latest report from the Mount Semeru Observation Post on Friday (3/7/2026), the highest mountain on Java Island was recorded launching incandescent lava avalanches seven times.
Observation Post officer, Yadi Yuliandi, confirmed that the volcanic material in the form of incandescent lava had a runout distance of 2,000 meters or two kilometers. The flow direction was observed moving toward the southeast sector, specifically toward the Besuk Kobokan area.
As of now, the status of Mount Semeru remains at Level III or Standby. Given the potential hazards, authorities emphasized a strict prohibition against any public activity within a 13-kilometer radius from the crater center, particularly along the southeast sector.
Furthermore, residents living near river basins originating from Mount Semeru are asked to exercise extra vigilance. In addition to the threat of pyroclastic flows, the potential for lahar floods could occur at any time, especially when heavy rainfall hits the peak area.
