The Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has reissued a warning to the public regarding the volcanic activity of Mount Anak Krakatau located in the Sunda Strait waters. To date, the volcano situated on the border of South Lampung and Banten remains set at Level III or Alert status.
Mount Anak Krakatau Observation Post officer, Deny Mardiono, stated that intensive monitoring continues following fluctuating visual and seismic activity recorded. Based on observations on Wednesday (8/7/2026), plumes of smoke from the active crater were seen rising tens of meters high, indicating ongoing dynamics inside the volcano.
Seismogram data analysis shows continuous tremor activity or microtremors. These vibrations indicate the movement of magma or fluids below the surface, with recorded earthquake amplitudes ranging between 1 to 15 millimeters. Although volcanic activity is monitored as active, weather conditions around the 157-meter-high volcano are reported to be fairly clear, with sea waves in the surrounding waters remaining calm.
As a disaster risk mitigation measure, authorities strictly reiterate the prohibition for tourists, hikers, and the general public from carrying out any activities within a three-kilometer radius of the active crater. This preventive step is taken to anticipate potential sudden eruptions that could endanger public safety around affected areas.
