The Association of Indonesian Forest Concession Holders (APHI) Regional Commissariat of Riau is encouraging forestry business actors in the region to immediately seize carbon trading business opportunities. This strategic step is driven by the issuance of new regulations that are deemed to provide legal certainty and space for sustainable, environment-based business development.

In collaboration with environmental technology company Fairatmos, APHI Riau organized an in-depth discussion socializing Ministerial Regulation of Forestry (Permenhut) Number 6 of 2026 in Pekanbaru, Wednesday (15/7/2026). This meeting focused on accelerating carbon projects within Forest Utilization Business License (PBPH) areas to align business actors' actions with current regulations.

The Chairman of APHI Riau, Muller Tampubolon, explained that the regulatory synergy between Presidential Regulation (Perpres) Number 110 of 2025 and Permenhut Number 6 of 2026 is an important milestone for the forestry industry. This regulation reinforces the state's recognition that forests do not only produce physical wood commodities, but also have high economic value from carbon absorption services.

According to Muller, the new regulation opens the way for more environmentally friendly multi-business forestry schemes. Through the greenhouse gas emission offset mechanism, business permit holders can optimize the economic value of forest areas while responsibly maintaining green cover.

Despite the huge potential, the implementation of carbon trading on the ground still faces various real challenges. APHI Riau highlighted the high initial project investment costs, global carbon price fluctuations, the availability of credible methodologies, and the urgent need for reliable human resource readiness.

Therefore, collaboration with various technology providers and full government support are crucial. APHI Riau hopes the government can simplify bureaucratic processes, provide reliable market infrastructure, and continue to guide business actors to compete in the international carbon market.
