The Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Lumajang Regency, East Java, firmly dismissed information circulating on various social media platforms regarding reports of Mount Semeru's eruption. The narrative claiming that the highest volcano on Java Island has erupted is confirmed to have no valid factual basis.
Head of Lumajang BPBD Executive Board, Isnugroho, urged the public not to be provoked by misleading content that could potentially cause public anxiety. He emphasized that any information regarding volcanic activity must be handled wisely and refer only to authorized authorities.
"We urge the public not to easily believe confusing rumors on social media. It is very important to first verify with the local government, BPBD, or officers at the Mount Semeru Observation Post before resharing it," Isnugroho said on Tuesday (May 4, 2026).
As of now, data updates regarding Mount Semeru's activity remain solely based on official reports from the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG). The public is asked to remain calm, stay vigilant, and comply with official instructions from field personnel regarding disaster mitigation.
