The Tulungagung Branch of BPJS Kesehatan recorded an increasing trend in the financial burden for catastrophic diseases within its coverage area, which includes Tulungagung, Trenggalek, and Pacitan Regencies. Catastrophic diseases themselves are defined as serious medical conditions requiring long-term intensive treatment and consuming exceptionally high medical costs.
Based on data presented by the Head of BPJS Kesehatan Tulungagung Branch, Fitriyah Kusumawati, heart disease ranked top as the largest contributor to cost claims. Throughout 2025, a total of 222,974 cases were recorded with claim values reaching IDR 116.817 billion. This trend continued through May 2026, recording 89,054 cases with financing costs reaching IDR 48.73 billion.
In addition to heart disease, kidney failure ranked second on the list of diseases with the highest treatment costs. In 2025, there were 73,775 kidney failure cases with total claims amounting to IDR 80.811 billion. Up to May 2026, 29,452 cases of kidney failure were recorded, with a cost burden reaching IDR 31.348 billion.
Fitriyah explained that besides these two diseases, several other medical conditions fall into the catastrophic category with significant funding requirements. The 2025 data showed high case numbers for other categories, namely 139,770 stroke cases, 52,808 cancer cases, 3,426 liver cirrhosis cases, 1,758 thalassemia cases, and 82 hemophilia cases.
