Mount Semeru, located in Lumajang Regency, East Java, showed increased volcanic activity again by releasing pyroclastic flows (APG) on Wednesday (15/7/2026) afternoon. Although this seismic activity was monitored as quite significant, the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) of Lumajang Regency confirmed that there has been no direct impact on residential areas around the mountain slopes.
Based on data from the Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PPGA), the seismic vibration of the pyroclastic flow activity recorded a maximum amplitude of 22 millimeters with a duration of approximately 3 minutes and 7 seconds. The runout distance of the pyroclastic flow was visually difficult to observe directly as the summit was covered in dense fog when the incident occurred.
Chief Executive of BPBD Lumajang, Isnugroho, explained that the recording of pyroclastic flow activity was first detected around 11:20 AM WIB and conditions have now subsided. He confirmed that residents on the mountain slopes continue their normal activities as the safe distance of settlements from the flow path is maintained.
To anticipate potential follow-up hazards, BPBD Lumajang has placed Quick Response Team (TRC) personnel on standby. This preventive measure was prepared to mitigate risks should an escalation of volcanic activity toward populated settlements occur within an eight-kilometer radius of Semeru's crater center.
In addition to the direct threat of pyroclastic flows, the secondary danger of cold lava floods (lahars) has become a primary concern for authorities. Volcanic materials such as rocks and sand accumulated on Semeru's upper slopes are prone to being carried by water currents during moderate to heavy rainfall in the peak area. Therefore, communities living along riverbanks originating from the mountain are advised to remain alert at all times.
As of now, Mount Semeru's activity status remains at Level III (Alert/Siaga). The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) recommends that the public cease all activities in the southeastern sector along Besuk Kobokan up to a radius of 13 kilometers. Residents are also asked to stay at least 500 meters away from riverbanks to avoid the threat of expanding cold lava flows.
