Mount Karangetang, located on Siau Island, North Sulawesi, was reported to have undergone an explosive eruption on Sunday (12/07/26) night. Based on data from the Volcano Monitoring Post (PGA), the volcanic activity was observed starting at around 7:14 PM WITA.
Head of the Karangetang PGA Post, Yudia P. Tatipang, explained that the eruption triggered the ejection of incandescent material around the crater area. The fairly strong intensity of the explosion caused reed vegetation around the peak to catch fire, creating a striking red light reflection on the clouds visible from a distance.
Monitoring results show that the direction of the ejected material moved predominantly toward the northern sector of the mountain. Observers confirmed that so far, the incandescent material remains within a safe radius and has not reached residential areas on the mountain slopes.
Currently, Mount Karangetang remains at Level II (Alert) status. The technical team in the field continues to conduct strict monitoring to anticipate the potential emergence of subsequent lava flows. Local residents are advised to remain calm and strictly obey the issued exclusion zone recommendations to ensure mutual safety.
