Mount Karangetang, located on Siau Island, North Sulawesi, was reported to have experienced volcanic activity in the form of an explosive eruption on Sunday night. The event, which occurred at around 19:14 WITA, triggered the ejection of incandescent material around the crater area.
Head of the Karangetang Volcano Observation Post (PGA), Yudia P. Tatipang, explained that the ejection of hot material briefly triggered a fire in the reed vegetation around the crater. The light reflection from the fire was visible brightly up to the clouds, with the eruption predominantly directed toward the northern sector.
Although the volcanic activity is considered quite strong, authorities confirmed that the ejected material is not expected to reach residential areas. Currently, ground teams remain on high alert to monitor the potential for post-eruption incandescent lava flows.
As of now, Mount Karangetang's status remains set at Level II (Alert). Local residents are asked to remain calm and consistently comply with official recommendations from the authorities to avoid unwanted risks around the danger zone.
