Volcanic activity at Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki in East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, has reportedly increased again. According to observations by the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the volcano launched an ash column 1.4 kilometers above its peak on Tuesday (22/4/2026) afternoon at 11:37 WITA.
Lana Saria, Acting Head of the Geological Agency, revealed that the observed ash column was thick and grey. The plume of volcanic material was observed drifting toward the west and northwest, posing a potential risk of ashfall on surrounding settlements.
Given that the volcano's status remains at Level III (Alert), relevant authorities emphasized a strict ban on residents, hikers, and tourists from conducting any activities within a 5-kilometer radius of the eruption center. The public is urged to remain calm and refer only to official information from relevant government agencies to avoid misinformation.
In addition to the ash hazard, residents are also advised to be alert to the potential for cold lava flows (lahars), particularly those living near river basins originating from the peak, such as the areas of Dulipali, Nobo, Hokeng Jaya, and Nawakote. The use of protective face masks is strongly recommended for residents directly exposed to volcanic ash.
Local authorities are expected to continue strengthening coordination with the Mount Lewotobi Laki-laki Observation Post in Pululera Village and the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG). These mitigation steps are being taken as a preventive measure to ensure public safety amid the volcano's fluctuating activity.
