The hiking tourism area in Wonosobo Regency has now expanded with the official opening of the Mount Lawang hiking trail located in Bendungan Village, Kaliwiro District. This new destination was inaugurated through a thanksgiving event involving various stakeholders on Saturday (4/7/2026).

The presence of Mount Lawang is expected to be an alternative for nature lovers who have mostly known Wonosobo through the charm of Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing. Unlike other high mountains, Mount Lawang offers a unique trail character with a peak elevation of about 900 meters above sea level (masl) and a trail length of six kilometers.

The Coordinator of RPB SAR Kaliwiro, Habib, emphasized that the development of this area focuses on the concept of ecotourism. "The main focus is not just recreation, but education and ecosystem preservation. We invite hikers to help preserve the flora and fauna in this Secondary Natural Forest area," explained Habib.

Topographically, this hiking trail offers quite challenging terrain with dense vegetation, steep cliffs, and river streams. At the summit, hikers will be treated to views of the sunrise and sunset, as well as the majestic silhouettes of Mount Sindoro and Mount Sumbing in the distance.

In addition to its natural wealth, this area also holds folklore mysteries regarding the origin of its name. Some residents believe the name 'Lawang' comes from the shape of a stone cliff resembling a door, while another version associates it with a local legend about a mystical door believed by the local community.

For interested hikers, all administrative services can be accessed through the basecamp located at the Bendungan Village Office. As part of the opening celebration, the management is offering a promotional ticket price of Rp25,000 per person, down from the normal price of Rp30,000. To ensure safety, RPB SAR Kaliwiro has also been on standby to support the safety aspects of hikers during their activities in the area.
