Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, responded to public perceptions that often associate the Mount Kawi area with the practice of pesugihan (rituals for acquiring wealth). According to him, this phenomenon is a reflection of the rich tradition and diverse perspectives of Indonesian society that have grown and developed across generations.
Fadli emphasized that every region has a unique approach to interpreting historical sites and local traditions within their environment. He views Mount Kawi as an element of the highly heterogeneous cultural mosaic of the Indonesian archipelago.
“Mount Kawi is part of our diversity in understanding various things. What happens there, as well as in various other places, is part of the mosaic of ancient traditions and culture,” Fadli told reporters in Jakarta on Thursday (9/7).
Furthermore, he stressed that the government does not view this phenomenon from just a single perspective. The government's main focus is how the existence of these traditions and cultural sites can bring a positive impact and real benefits to the surrounding communities.
