The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Industry, is initiating strategic steps to modernize the national maritime industry. This effort is being carried out through a strategic partnership with Russia, focusing on strengthening domestic shipyard capacity and expanding market share in the Southeast Asian region.
Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, emphasized that this collaboration serves as an important catalyst for the development of the national shipping industry. The main focus of this cooperation includes investment, transfer of state-of-the-art technology, workforce competency enhancement, and the initiation of joint ship production projects. This step is considered strategic given that Indonesia, as an archipelagic nation, has a very high logistical dependence on the marine transport sector.
This synergy is viewed as a complementary combination between Indonesia's massive domestic needs and Russia's technological advantages. Russia itself is known to have a proven track record in marine engineering, advanced propulsion systems, and complex commercial ship construction design. The integration of these two aspects is expected to create a much more resilient and competitive domestic shipping industry.
The opportunity for this cooperation is even wider open following the signing of the Free Trade Agreement between Indonesia and the Eurasian Economic Union. The Director General of Resilience, Territorial, and International Industrial Access of the Ministry of Industry, Tri Supondy, stated that this partnership is a concrete step to optimize Indonesia's market potential while leveraging Russia's technical expertise in building a modern maritime ecosystem.
