The Javan Hawk-Eagle Sanctuary Center (PSSEJ) area in Mount Halimun Salak National Park, Bogor, now has a new breath of life. A total of 600 rasamala tree seedlings (Altingia excelsa) have been planted in open land previously only covered by shrubs, as a concrete effort to restore this crucial mountain ecosystem.
This environmental action titled "From Every Step, A Forest Grows" is the realization of the participation conversion of 600 runners in the "Sharp Run for the Future" event held previously in Jakarta. This collaboration between PT Sharp Electronics Indonesia, Hutan Itu Indonesia, and Postinc Media aims to support the survival of the Javan hawk-eagle (Nisaetus bartelsi), an endemic species that is currently endangered.
Pandu Setio, PR & Brand Communication Department Head of PT Sharp Electronics Indonesia, explained that this planting is not just a ceremony. The rasamala tree was chosen for its resilient characteristics and its ability to absorb large amounts of carbon, as well as its vital role in maintaining the hydrological cycle in the mountainous forest areas of West Java.
Furthermore, the President Director of PT Sharp Electronics Indonesia, Shinji Teraoka, emphasized that this initiative is part of the company's sustainability philosophy. He hopes that this small step by the runners can transform into the lungs of the world in the coming decades, while also inspiring other industrial sectors to care more about biodiversity conservation.
Ecologically, this project is projected to restore 2.4 hectares of land. Upon reaching maturity, these hundreds of rasamala trees are estimated to be able to absorb up to 180 tons of carbon dioxide emissions per year, while also providing habitat for the prey of the Javan hawk-eagle so that the food chain in the conservation area remains optimally preserved.
