The once-harmonious partnership between Apple and OpenAI has now turned into a fierce legal confrontation. The Cupertino-based tech giant has officially filed a lawsuit in the North California federal court, accusing OpenAI of systematically stealing trade secrets to facilitate their ambitions of entering the hardware industry.
In its lawsuit documents, Apple claims that OpenAI recruited a number of its former staff with instructions that violate professional ethics. One crucial point highlighted by Apple is the alleged involvement of Tang Tan, a former Apple executive who now serves as the head of hardware at OpenAI. Tan is accused of directing applicants to leak technical information and bring Apple's confidential components into job interview sessions.
This conflict was triggered by a shift in OpenAI's business direction as it began entering the hardware sector, including the acquisition of the company IO Products. Apple viewed this move as a direct threat, leading to their decision to pivot Siri's virtual assistant support away from OpenAI and integrate Google's Gemini AI model instead.
In addition to allegations of unethical recruitment, Apple also accuses OpenAI of misappropriating its proprietary metal manufacturing techniques. Apple claims OpenAI misled business partners by giving the impression that they had obtained official permission to use the technology. One former employee, Chang Liu, was even accused of running off with physical assets, namely an Apple laptop.
Responding to these allegations, OpenAI categorically denies engaging in illegal practices. An OpenAI spokesperson emphasized that the company's focus remains on developing innovative technology for the general public and has no interest in stealing the trade secrets of other parties.
This legal situation presents a major test for OpenAI, which is currently preparing for an Initial Public Offering (IPO). For the global technology market, this feud highlights the tensions surrounding artificial intelligence competition and the protection of intellectual property amid highly competitive, accelerating innovation.
