The Branch Executive Board of the Indonesian National Student Movement (DPC GMNI) Indragiri Hilir has issued sharp criticism regarding national economic conditions, which it deems increasingly concerning. The student organization highlighted a series of issues pressing the public, ranging from rupiah exchange rate fluctuations and surges in non-subsidized fuel prices to declining public purchasing power.
Chairman of DPC GMNI Indragiri Hilir, Muhammad Rizky, stated that the weakening of the rupiah against the US dollar is not merely a financial market issue. According to him, the derivative impacts of this condition are very real, namely skyrocketing production costs and prices of basic necessities that directly burden lower-income communities.
"The government must not take this situation lightly. The steps taken must be concrete and measurable, not just normative narratives that do not address the root of the problem on the ground," Rizky emphasized in his statement.
Furthermore, Rizky assessed that the non-subsidized fuel price hike policy has worsened economic uncertainty for both businesses and households. He stressed that the accumulation of these various economic pressures has triggered widespread unrest, eroding public trust in the government's policy direction.
As a form of moral responsibility, DPC GMNI Indragiri Hilir affirmed it will continue to monitor national economic dynamics. The group issued a stern warning to the government to immediately stabilize prices and strengthen the rupiah exchange rate. If there is no significant change in the near future, they expressed readiness to take to the streets with the people to constitutionally voice their aspirations.
