Mount Karangetang, located on Siau Island, North Sulawesi, showed significant volcanic activity again on Sunday (12/7/2026) night. The explosive eruption, which occurred at around 7:14 PM WITA, caused incandescent material to fall in the area around the crater peak.
Head of the Karangetang Volcano Observation Post (PGA), Yudia P. Tatipang, explained that the eruption burned reed vegetation around the crater. The reflection of the flames hitting the clouds briefly created a striking visual from a distance, giving the impression of a fire spreading northward.
Although the intensity of the eruption was quite strong, the Karangetang PGA confirmed that the ejection of volcanic material so far remains within a safe radius and has not reached residential areas. Technical teams are currently on alert to monitor the movement of incandescent lava flows as a post-eruption precautionary measure.
Currently, the status of Mount Karangetang remains at Level II (Alert). The public is urged not to panic, but to remain vigilant and comply with all safety directives issued by relevant authorities to avoid unwanted risks.
