The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Management (TNBTS) has adopted a policy to temporarily close all climbing access to Mount Semeru, East Java. The decision, outlined in Announcement Letter Number PG.16/T.8/TU/HMS.01.08/B/07/2026, was made out of respect for the series of religious rituals of Hari Raya Karo observed by the Tenggerese people.
The operational closure of the climbing routes is scheduled for 12 days, from August 7 to August 18, 2026. Head of TNBTS Management, Rudijanta Tjahjah Nugraha, explained that this policy follows a request from the Ranupani Village Government to preserve the sacredness of the traditional celebration.
For hikers, the deadline for climbing activities is set for Thursday, August 6, 2026. All hikers are required to descend from the 3,676-meter-high mountain by August 7, 2026, at 16:00 WIB at the latest. The hiking trails are scheduled to reopen to the public on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
TNBTS is also providing a solution for hikers affected by the closure, particularly those who had previously scheduled climbs during this period. The rescheduling mechanism will be communicated directly to the group leaders via the WhatsApp number registered in the ticket booking system on the official website bromotenggersemeru.id.
Although the hiking trails are completely closed, authorities emphasized that tourism and camping activities in the Ranu Regulo area are still allowed to operate as usual. The public, tourism service providers, and all related parties are asked to comply with these provisions to ensure the smooth and solemn celebration of Hari Raya Karo.
