No longer limited to data analysis or reading diagnostic results, this technology is beginning to play an active role as a doctor's companion in complex heart surgery procedures, particularly in transcatheter mitral valve repair or mitral regurgitation procedures.
At St. Antonius Hospital in the Netherlands, interventional cardiologists are utilizing AI-based imaging technology developed in collaboration with Philips. This innovation allows doctors to navigate medical devices into the heart with high accuracy without undergoing open-heart surgery. This represents a significant breakthrough given that transcatheter procedures are performed while the patient's heart is still beating.
The main challenge in mitral valve repair is ensuring that the device is placed in a very specific position so as not to damage the organ's structure. Previously, doctors had to synchronize visual information from two different screens, namely X-ray and echocardiography. Now, the AI system is capable of integrating both imaging modalities into a single, real-time unified display, and can even detect the device's location even when it falls outside the two-dimensional field of view.
The system, known as DeviceGuide, serves as intelligent navigation that helps doctors continuously monitor the movement of instruments inside the body. With optimal visualization despite the continuously beating heart, the precision of the procedure can be dramatically improved compared to conventional methods.
In addition to improving technical precision, the use of AI has also been proven to streamline medical team coordination in the operating room. With a uniform visual reference for all staff, decision-making becomes more efficient, allowing doctors to fully focus on patient safety. The success of this technology has now set a new standard relied upon by cardiologists in their daily practice.
