Amid the dominance of global proprietary technology providers, Indonesia, which is accelerating its digital economic growth, is faced with the challenge of technological independence. With the projected value of the digital economy potentially reaching 180 to 340 billion US dollars by the end of this decade, dependence on a handful of global technology corporations poses a major risk that must be anticipated so that the direction of the national digital industry is not controlled by foreign parties.
The adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) in the country is now accelerating rapidly, with daily AI utilization reaching 80 percent and the penetration of agentic AI expanding further. However, many business players are trapped in thinking that the AI technology they lease represents permanent operational control. In fact, without independent data, architecture, and governance foundations, AI systems built on closed platforms are vulnerable to large-scale operational failures and restrictive cost dependencies (vendor lock-in).
As an alternative, open-source technology serves as a democratic solution to maintain industry flexibility. This independence rests on three main pillars, the first of which is interoperability. This capability allows organizations to replace technology components without having to overhaul the entire system. A successful example of this can be seen in the SATUSEHAT national health platform, which is capable of securely integrating data from various healthcare facilities without being locked into a closed ecosystem owned by a single vendor.
The second pillar is digital sovereignty, which has now become an operational necessity amid strict regulations such as the Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP). Relying entirely on foreign public cloud computing carries high risks related to unilateral tariff policy changes or geopolitical disruptions. By adopting a hybrid architecture, companies can keep sensitive data under their full control while continuing to enjoy AI innovations safely and legally.
The third pillar, Private AI, completes this ecosystem by bringing computing processes directly to the location of internally managed data. This step ensures the protection of the company's intellectual property rights without reducing the quality of data analysis. Through the integration of interoperability, data sovereignty, and Private AI, Indonesia has a great opportunity to build a technological ecosystem that is not only more affordable but also adaptive, audit-compliant, and relevant to local needs.
