FIFA President Gianni Infantino is now under intense pressure after dozens of Members of the European Parliament rallied support to launch an official investigation into his leadership. This move follows the controversy surrounding the revoking of a red card sanction against United States national team striker Folarin Balogun amid the 2026 World Cup.
The issue began when FIFA surprisingly overturned a one-match suspension for Balogun. The decision was made just a day after direct communication between US President Donald Trump and Infantino. This action triggered a sharp reaction from European legislators who viewed it as a perversion of justice and the subordination of world football's governing body to the political interests of the US administration.
A number of lawmakers, including Barry Andrews and Lara Wolters, strongly condemned the action in a joint statement. They emphasized that the integrity of the sport has been compromised by political interference that ignores transparent and impartial rules. Currently, 35 lawmakers have signed a petition urging the FIFA Ethics Committee to conduct an in-depth investigation into the alleged violation of neutrality.
Not only in parliament, Infantino's position is also threatened within the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Human rights group FairSquare plans to lodge a formal complaint with the IOC regarding alleged repeated violations of political neutrality principles required for leaders of international sports organizations. IOC President Kirsty Coventry signaled that her office is ready to follow up on the complaint once formally received.
FIFA previously claimed that the cancellation of the sanction was purely a decision of the Disciplinary Committee. However, this statement was deemed insufficient to quell public criticism and expanding calls for an investigation. This scandal poses a serious threat to FIFA's credibility in maintaining its independence from external political pressure in international football.
