Public confidence in Balikpapan's local economic conditions slowed during the second quarter of 2026. Bank Indonesia recorded the Consumer Confidence Index (CCI) at 123.7, a correction from 132.3 in the previous quarter. This decline was triggered by the end of National Religious Holidays euphoria and price adjustments for non-subsidized fuel (BBM) and LPG, which affected purchasing power.

Head of Bank Indonesia Balikpapan Representative Office, Robi Ariadi, assessed that this achievement still reflects solid economic resilience. Consumer confidence remains strong, mainly supported by increased perceptions of current income, which serves as a key pillar amid challenges in job availability and durable goods purchases.

Demographically, the lower-middle-income group with expenditures between Rp2 million and Rp3 million emerged as the most optimistic segment, recording the highest CCI at 144.2. Meanwhile, young people aged 20 to 30 were the most confident age group regarding future economic prospects compared to other age brackets.

Balikpapan's current economic dynamics are also influenced by the transition of national strategic projects, such as the RDMP (Refinery Development Master Plan), entering its completion phase. However, these pressures are offset by the Free Nutritious Meal (MBG) program, which creates new jobs, as well as the vibrant service sector, such as laundries and cafes, which continue to show positive growth.

Although the Consumer Expectations Index fell to 132.1, the people of Balikpapan generally maintain positive expectations for economic conditions over the next six months. Projected income growth and job availability remain the drivers of public optimism in facing economic challenges in the second half of the year.
