Jakarta Regional Police (Polda Metro Jaya) officially conducted an examination of property conglomerate Tan Kian following a search conducted on Thursday (9/7). This legal action places the founder of Century Properties Indonesia back in the public spotlight, particularly regarding his alleged involvement in a corruption case currently under investigation by authorities.
Tan Kian is the figure behind Dua Mutiara Group, a business entity overseeing prestigious projects in Indonesia, such as Pacific Place SCBD, The Ritz-Carlton Jakarta, and JW Marriott Hotel. His success in building this property empire even earned him a spot on Forbes' list of the richest people in Indonesia, and he previously made headlines after participating in an auction for a luxury watch valued at Rp106 billion in Geneva.
However, behind his profile as a top-tier businessman, Tan Kian's track record is intertwined with several major corruption investigations handled by the Attorney General's Office. His name previously surfaced in the PT Asabri corruption case, where he was suspected of playing a role in providing property assets used as money laundering vehicles.
Tan Kian's involvement was also mentioned in a business partnership scheme with Benny Tjokrosaputro regarding the development of the luxury South Hills apartments in South Jakarta. At that time, law enforcement authorities suspected a connection between the land assets and the corruption case at PT Asuransi Jiwasraya, which involved a Joint Operation (KSO) scheme in funding its construction.
Although this series of information is part of the investigation process, Tan Kian's legal status and level of involvement depend entirely on the course of judicial proceedings. The latest case involving him has once again drawn serious attention to how the property sector frequently intersects with financial flows in large-scale corruption cases in the country.
