The operation of the new KMP Ferry crossing route in the southern ring area of Lampung opens up strategic business opportunities for PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry (Persero). This public service expansion step not only eases land traffic congestion but also transforms into a promising new source of revenue for the state-owned enterprise (BUMN).
This integrated maritime logistics corridor connects several key points from Krui, Kota Agung, Panjang, to Bakauheni Port. The integration of these ports is deemed capable of optimizing regional logistics distribution in a more targeted and efficient manner.
Development observer, Mahendra Utama, revealed that the opening of this new route has a significant economic impact beyond its public service function. According to him, the dominance of this crossing route provides ample space for ASDP to generate recurring income, both from tickets for logistics trucks, private vehicles, and industrial raw material transport.
This southern waterway directly breaks up the concentration of vehicle queues that have been piling up at Bakauheni Port. The flow of goods distribution can now be channeled directly from the West Coast region without burdening the already congested Trans-Sumatra land route.
From an operational standpoint, utilizing sea routes offers far more efficient economies of scale compared to land transportation. By operating a fleet of vessels with a capacity of 3,000 to 5,000 Gross Tonnage (GT), ASDP can transport dozens of trucks at once in a single trip, significantly reducing logistics costs per unit of cargo. This tactical step is expected to further strengthen ASDP's position as the backbone of the national maritime economy at the gateway of Sumatra Island.
