Limited access to electricity is no longer the main obstacle for fishermen on Longos Island, West Manggarai Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Through the utilization of a hybrid Solar Power Plant (PLTS), local fishermen can now access fish cold storage facilities to preserve the freshness of their catch before it goes to market.
Previously, the majority of the island's residents who depend on the marine sector often suffered losses due to the lack of 24-hour electricity. Without adequate cooling equipment, fish catches had to be sold quickly at low prices to prevent spoiling. This condition suppressed the fishermen's welfare because they lacked bargaining power in determining the selling price.
To address this long-standing issue, PT Paragon Technology and Innovation collaborated with the Insan Bumi Mandiri Foundation to provide one ice-making machine (ice maker) and two solar-powered cold storage units. The hybrid solar energy system was chosen as a sustainable solution to ensure that the cooling facilities continue to operate independently amid conventional electricity infrastructure limitations.
The tangible benefits were immediately felt by local residents. Puhasad, a local fisherman, expressed that this technology gives them the flexibility to manage their supply chain independently. He explained that fishermen no longer worry about their catch spoiling quickly and can more freely seek markets that offer the best selling prices.
Not just providing physical assistance, this collaborative program also equips the local community with operational training and machine maintenance management. Periodic mentoring is provided to ensure the fishing community can manage all facilities independently, ensuring the long-term sustainability of the economic benefits of this renewable energy.
