The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Authority (TNBTS) has officially blacklisted three hikers who engaged in illegal activities within the Mount Semeru area. This sanction bans all three from visiting any conservation areas managed by TNBTS as well as other conservation regions across Indonesia for the next five years.
TNBTS Public Relations Officer, Endrip Wahyutama, stated that this decision is a firm action against violations of hiking procedures. "Sanctions have been imposed on the three offenders. They are blacklisted for five years from all visitation activities in the TNBTS area and other conservation regions," Endrip said on Friday (12/6/2026).
Furthermore, Endrip explained that legal proceedings against the hikers are still ongoing. The management is currently postponing in-depth questioning as one of the hikers is still recovering medically from injuries sustained during the illegal climb. Once their physical condition permits, all three will undergo official interrogation reporting (BAP) in accordance with applicable legal regulations.
The incident began when the three hikers recklessly entered the Mount Semeru area via an unofficial route at Candi Jawar Purbakala while the main hiking trails were completely closed due to volcanic activity. One of the hikers reportedly slipped into a ravine and suffered a broken leg, triggering a large-scale joint search and rescue operation.
The rescue effort—involving Basarnas, the Military-Police (TNI-Polri), various volunteer communities, and local residents—was challenging due to the extremely steep terrain. TNBTS expressed high appreciation to all teams involved in successfully evacuating the victim to receive further medical treatment at a hospital.
